Censorship

Censorship of a music video is restriction of explicit use of inappropriate or offensive content. The reasons for censorship to take place within a music video are usually executed due to the use of moral, political, military or religious references. The censorship of a music video can result in the removal of the video altogether of edited versions of the original video in order to for the video to still be used but will not be offensive to certain segmented groups of the audience.
Due to the fact that a music video is a representative form of expressing an artist’s feelings and sending out a message can sometimes result in that artist making a statement which can be considered offensive. Therefore if this occurs the censorship bodies would either ban the video altogether or require an edited version before the video can be shown on any legal music video platforms.
However the definition of censorship and the censorship guidelines are different from one country to another. Therefore some factors that are considered to be offensive in one country could be perfectly normal and appropriate in another. The reason for this is that diversification of different cultures in different countries, which therefore result in different laws and a variation of ethics. Although these laws alter there is very rarely confusion of what is acceptable. The reason for this is that the label company that are producing the music video will be aware of this phenomenon and therefore will be able to produce edited versions of the video in order for it to meet the censorship requirements in a particular part of the world.
One example of a censored music video which has been edited in order for it to be suitable for all visual consumption is Eminem – Stan. The reason as for why this video had to be censored was due to the violence within the video and the explicit language throughout the song. The reason as for why these factors were essential to be censored was due to the fact that the explicit scenes of violence between the characters in the video and the swearing throughout the lyrics. These factors were considered offensive due to the fact that the audience viewing and listening to the music video may not be of a suitable age in order to consume this video both visually and its sound.

Adam Jones - Research into Target Market

The target audience for my music video of Justin Timberlake’s song “last night” is for males and females between the ages of 16-24. The reason for this is that the lyrics in the song are based on a relationship which is broken up because of an incident that happened “last night”. This would appeal to most people between the ages of 16-24 because they would be at the point in their lives where serious relationships may form and break.

I have done some research into this target audience in order to appeal to them as much as possible in out my video. Therefore I have decided to research into the clothing styles and range within this age group for both men and women. The reason for this is that if i get the characters in my music video to dress the same as the audience they will find it easier to relate to the narrative of the video.

What The Target Audience Could Wear:

Females: These items of clothing show what a girl between the ages of 16-24 would generally wear. The target audience of the song would generally be dressed like and by using my research I was able to infer that they would shop in places such as River Island and Top Shop.

Males:

Males between the ages of 16-24 tend to by designer clothing as well as high street retailers. Therefore they would shop at various stores such as House of Fraser, Per Lui, River Island, topman and JD Sports.
