Adam Jones - Research into Target Market

The target audience for my music video of Justin Timberlake’s song “last night” is for males and females between the ages of 16-24. The reason for this is that the lyrics in the song are based on a relationship which is broken up because of an incident that happened “last night”. This would appeal to most people between the ages of 16-24 because they would be at the point in their lives where serious relationships may form and break.

I have done some research into this target audience in order to appeal to them as much as possible in out my video. Therefore I have decided to research into the clothing styles and range within this age group for both men and women. The reason for this is that if i get the characters in my music video to dress the same as the audience they will find it easier to relate to the narrative of the video.

What The Target Audience Could Wear:

Females: These items of clothing show what a girl between the ages of 16-24 would generally wear. The target audience of the song would generally be dressed like and by using my research I was able to infer that they would shop in places such as River Island and Top Shop.

Males:

Males between the ages of 16-24 tend to by designer clothing as well as high street retailers. Therefore they would shop at various stores such as House of Fraser, Per Lui, River Island, topman and JD Sports.

Adam Jones - Unconventional Music Videos

Unconventional music videos are produced in order to make a song as memorable as possible for an audience. In order to be unconventional the video has to be unique and usually only appeals to a portion of the sub-culture of the song.
Advantages of unconventional music videos:
• Memorable videos that are individual
• To give the artist an intellectual sense
• The artist can build a niche audience
• Abstract comes to life
Disadvantages of unconventional music videos:
• Limited target audience
• No relationship built between artist and audience
• Some members of the audience may find the videos bizarre and lose interest
Michel Gondry:
One director of unconventional music videos is Michel Gondry, Gondry was born in Versailles France on May 8th 1969. Gondry is a French film, commercial and music video director and an Academy Award-winning screenwriter. He is most popular for his extremely inventive visual styles and unique imagination.

Gondry is very popular for his uniquely unconventional music videos. Gondry claims he gets his ideas for his music videos from his personal lifetime experiences and his dreams, and instead of sharing these experiences and dreams with people he expresses them in his music videos. Gondry also claims he wanted to create shapes and emotions using the human body. He claims that he is inspired by the work of Michael Jackson.

One of Gondry’s unconventional music videos is “Bachelorette by Bjork”. One reason why this video is unconventional is due to the large amount of long-shots. The reason why this makes the music video unconventional is because in music videos close-ups are generally the most used camera shot in order for the audience to identify the artist.

Chris Cunningham:
Another director of unconventional music videos is Chris Cunningham, Cunningham is an English music video film director and video artist. He was born in Reading, Berkshire in 1970 and grew up in Lakenheath, Suffolk.
Cunningham’s explanation for his unconventional music videos is similar to Gondry’s due to the fact that he also bases his videos on his personal visions. Cunningham’s videos are very controversial among viewers due to the fact that some viewers find his videos inspirational due to the extreme levels of imagination and imagination. Whereas other viewers find his videos frightening and inhumane. This would therefore result in Cunningham having limited audience due to the fact that some people would refuse to watch his video because they do not agree with his ideas and the execution of them.

The image above is a prime example of Chris Cunningham’s work, it is a video from the Aphex Twins called come to daddy. This image clearly shows the unique imagination of Cunningham. It also shows why people would find his work very uncomfortable and inappropriate.

Adam Jones - Purpose of a Music Video

The image above shows all of the reasons why an artist would create a music video for a song. As shown from this diagram there are various reasons an artist would want to produce a music video for their song. Overall I feel that the most important reason for a music video is for the audience to remember the song/artist and video. The reason for this is that after watching the music video, the audience would automatically think of the artist in the video every time they listened to the track. Therefore the artist would be able to build a relationship between him/her and the audience.

To Get Recognition, Build Relationships and Promote Artist:

The image above is from Rihanna’s music video “take a Bow” this is an example of a close-up in order to show the audience who the artist is. The reason for this is that the artist can then build a relationship with their audience

To Show That Their Wealthy:

This image is taken from the video of Taio cruz’s “no other one” I have chosen this image due to the fact that it is clearly showing that the artist is wealthy via the sports car and huge house in the background. The artist’s clothing also represents wealth.

To show and create new dance trends by featuring dance routines:

This is an image taken from the music video of the JLS song “Beat Again”. This is relevant due to the fact that throughout the video the group perform a series of dance routines in order to allow the audience to impersonate and idolise them.

Adam Jones - Music Video Analysis: Goodwin’s Theory

Music Genre: Dance
Music Video: I Left my Heart in Tokyo.
I feel the video of ‘I left my heart in Tokyo’ is very effective in demonstrating the genre’s characteristics. The reason for this is that it includes a lot of shots showing people dancing, along with shots of the club scene in Tokyo. This follows the characteristics of a dance video due to the fact that people interested in dance music are usually attracted and connected to the club scene. The video also follows the characteristics of a dance video by featuring the artist and presenting them as two attractive women, this follows the characteristics of a dance video because the club scene is also related to sex via attracted women (sex-appeal).
The video of ‘I Left my Heart in Tokyo’ is very successful in relating the lyrics of the song to the visuals in the video. The reason for this is that the lyrics are related to the city of Tokyo and throughout the video there are several to show the speed of Tokyo, Tokyo’s landmarks and also the nightlife associated with Tokyo.
The video also follows the third point in Goodwin’s Theory by relating the music of the song with the visuals in the video. One way in which the music relates to the visuals is through speed/tempo of the beat and visuals. For example when the beat is slower the visuals mainly consist of the artists singing and dancing, whereas when the tempo of the beat increases, the speed of editing in the visuals increases to match and shows clips of the high speed and advanced technological city.

The video also follows Goodwin’s theory by showing close-ups of the artists dancing and performing. The reason for this is that record labels want the artists to be recognised by the song’s target audience. By using the method of showing close-ups of the artists may also result in certain factors recurring in all of the music video by this artist e.g. dance moves and other styles shown from the artists.
This close up is essential in order for the artist to gain recognition among their target audience.
This music video also has frequent references to the female body. For example in this video the female is used as a sex appeal to try and attract males. The reason for this is that the target audience of the video is 16-24 year olds, and the song itself would appeal to more females than males so the video is trying to attract more males to listen to the song whilst watching the video.
Overall I feel as though the video is very successful at attracting its target audience of 16-24 year olds. The reason for this is that there are a lot of references of the club scene and a high speed city. This would appeal to older teens and young adults due to the fact that they are related to “living life in the fast lane”, and would therefore be attracted to a high speed and technologically advanced city such as Tokyo.
