Unconventional music videos are produced in order to make a song as memorable as possible for an audience. In order to be unconventional the video has to be unique and usually only appeals to a portion of the sub-culture of the song.
Advantages of unconventional music videos:
• Memorable videos that are individual
• To give the artist an intellectual sense
• The artist can build a niche audience
• Abstract comes to life
Disadvantages of unconventional music videos:
• Limited target audience
• No relationship built between artist and audience
• Some members of the audience may find the videos bizarre and lose interest
Michel Gondry:
One director of unconventional music videos is Michel Gondry, Gondry was born in Versailles France on May 8th 1969. Gondry is a French film, commercial and music video director and an Academy Award-winning screenwriter. He is most popular for his extremely inventive visual styles and unique imagination.
Gondry is very popular for his uniquely unconventional music videos. Gondry claims he gets his ideas for his music videos from his personal lifetime experiences and his dreams, and instead of sharing these experiences and dreams with people he expresses them in his music videos. Gondry also claims he wanted to create shapes and emotions using the human body. He claims that he is inspired by the work of Michael Jackson.
One of Gondry’s unconventional music videos is “Bachelorette by Bjork”. One reason why this video is unconventional is due to the large amount of long-shots. The reason why this makes the music video unconventional is because in music videos close-ups are generally the most used camera shot in order for the audience to identify the artist.

Chris Cunningham:
Another director of unconventional music videos is Chris Cunningham, Cunningham is an English music video film director and video artist. He was born in Reading, Berkshire in 1970 and grew up in Lakenheath, Suffolk.
Cunningham’s explanation for his unconventional music videos is similar to Gondry’s due to the fact that he also bases his videos on his personal visions. Cunningham’s videos are very controversial among viewers due to the fact that some viewers find his videos inspirational due to the extreme levels of imagination and imagination. Whereas other viewers find his videos frightening and inhumane. This would therefore result in Cunningham having limited audience due to the fact that some people would refuse to watch his video because they do not agree with his ideas and the execution of them.

The image above is a prime example of Chris Cunningham’s work, it is a video from the Aphex Twins called come to daddy. This image clearly shows the unique imagination of Cunningham. It also shows why people would find his work very uncomfortable and inappropriate.
